China's agri hi-tech zone Yangling shares more than know-how with SCO In early June, a demonstration apple orchard featuring Chinese dwarf rootstock technology officially opened in Kara-Balta, Chuy Region, Kyrgyzstan, creating a new platform for the large-scale application of this cultivation technique in Central Asia. This initiative reflects the broader efforts by Yangling, an agricultural high-tech demonstration zone in west China's Shaanxi Province, to establish the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Demonstration Base for Agricultural Technology Exchange and Training. Over the past six years, the base has significantly accelerated the sharing of agricultural technologies between Yangling and SCO member states. Its technological demonstration effect has expanded, fostering deeper international exchanges and promoting agricultural international trade. Currently, Yangling has established 10 overseas agricultural technology demonstration parks in SCO countries, covering an area of over 30 million mu (approximately 5 million acres). It has dispatched 73 expert teams comprising over 190 specialists, conducting comparative experiments on 115 high-quality crop varieties and integrating and demonstrating efficient cultivation techniques. This year, Yangling has exported fresh fruit to more than ten countries, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Georgia, with shipments encompassing over ten varieties such as kiwi, blueberry, lemon, grape, navel orange, and sweet melon, totaling nearly 5,600 tons. During this six-year period, Yangling has attracted renowned international companies, such as McCain Foods, and foreign institutions like the Uzbekistan Commodity Exchange, through its free trade and comprehensive bonded zones. Meanwhile, an e-commerce platform for agricultural products from SCO countries has been launched, exploring trade in grains and bulk agricultural products via China-Europe freight trains. The China Yangling Agricultural Hi-Tech Fair, which has been held for 31 consecutive sessions, has increasingly highlighted "SCO elements" and successfully hosted three SCO agriculture expositions, with participation from all 26 member states. Efforts have driven over 2,000 commodities from SCO countries into the domestic market. The fair has also innovatively hosted overseas exhibitions, showcasing more than 100 agricultural products from Shaanxi, resulting in intentions to export 100,000 apple saplings and securing contracts worth over 30 million yuan. Yangling is now rapidly stepping onto the world stage, allowing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions for modern agricultural development to continuously benefit the SCO member states. To date, Yangling has completed 124 training sessions, educating over 2,500 agricultural technology staff and management personnel, and facilitating online learning for 48,000 participants through remote technology lectures. Via collaborative educational projects and overseas branches, it has trained over 300 international graduate and doctoral students in agriculture, along with 200 vocational education students. On June 5, Wahid Ali Haskeli, an agricultural official participating in Pakistan's agricultural talent training program, took time between classes to work with faculty and students at Northwest A&F University harvest wheat seedlings. "Here I have seen China's innovative results tailored to local conditions. I hope to learn technologies for water conservation and enhancing food security, further improving agricultural productivity in Pakistan," he said.
